Bad Ass Coffee; Virginia Beach (Renovation)

"One of the best examples of small-scale architectural renewal that I know of is the Bad Ass coffee shop on 18th Street in Virginia Beach. The little café ... is housed in an old beach cottage. Most structures like it have been or will soon be torn down. Thus, Bad Ass is important on two levels. It serves as an invaluable "third space"—a community meeting place ... with a distinctive Beach flavor. Moreover, it is preserving a piece of the Beach’s architectural heritage and character. It is a reminder of a time before national chains and sterile strip malls dominated the landscape."  -Tom Robotham, Editor, PortFolio Weekly, Sept. 25, 2007
